Visual impairment is a significant reduction of your visual ability that cannot be completely corrected with ordinary glasses, contact lenses, medical treatment and/or surgery. This condition can affect people of all ages, and is caused by functional alterations in your vision.

At home, work, or school, visual impairment has an impact on daily activities such as reading, writing, personal hygiene, personal autonomy and more.

According to the WHO, a person is declared visually impaired when vision in the best eye is within 3/10 and 1/20 after correction.

In particular, Italian law classifies visual impairment into the following categories:

Severe visual impairment:

• Affecting people whose residual vision in their best eye or both eyes is lower than 1/10, even after the strongest correction
• People whose remaining binocular vision is lower than 30%.

Medium visual impairment

• Affecting people whose residual vision in their best eye or both eyes is lower than 2/10, even after the strongest correction
• People whose remaining binocular vision is lower than 50%.

Minor visual impairment

• Affecting people whose residual vision in their best eye or both eyes is lower than 3/10, even after the strongest correction
• People whose remaining binocular vision is lower than 60%.
